Full Description

PRN 60261 Moated site, levelled to make way for playing fields in 1969. {4} The interpretation of this site as a moat has been questioned due to the serpentine shape of of its ditch, which may in fact be a former stream course, and the the fact that it is not named or shown on the tithe award or enclosure award maps. {9} The levelling of the earthworks was watched by the local vicar, who reported a surprising lack of finds. A few medieval sherds, including a Tattershall ware handle, were recovered. Just to the east of the moat, about a dozen large blocks of limestone and some cobble stones were noted and it was suggested that these may have been supports for the posts of a wooden building. Nothing was seen on the platform within the moat, although any deposits there may be deeper down. Prior to the levelling it was reported that the earthworks were indistinct. {4}{10} During a watching brief the remains of a pond thought to be associated with the moated enclosure was recorded.{7}{8} This moat appears to have been known locally as Pattinson's Moat. No explanation of this name is given. {11}
