Full Description

PRN 60206 Thorney Close moated site is situated across the road from the manor house in the hamlet of Northbeck. The site can be presumably be identified as manorial. However, its origins and tenurial context are difficult to elucidate, for the moat is one of five that survived into the present century in a vill which is characterised by a bewilderingly complex estate structure in the middle ages. No concrete evidence has come to light to identify the Thorney Close moat. {3} The scheduling includes a moated site at Northbeck, approximately 150m north east of Manor farm. The moated site is one of a group of five that existed in and around the village of Scredington within a 1.25km radius. The land holdings in this area during the Middle Ages were characterised by a complex estate structure. In 1086 two parcels of land were recorded, of these one settlement centre is thought to have been established in Scredington and the other at Northbeck. {7} The earthworks at the site include a rectangular platform or island surrounded by a 10-12m wide moat still holding water. There is a pronounced external bank on the north side of the moated site and a low broad bank to the south. There may once have been a further enclosure on the on the western side of the moat. {5}{7}
