Full Description

PRN 60258 Almshouses, founded in 1636 and rebuilt in 1857 by Charles Kirk. {1} Founded 1636, restored 1857. Mid C19 rebuild of C17 foundation. 'Gothick' style. 2 storeys in coursed stone with stone slate roof with stone stacks. 3 projecting porches under gables. Four windows of three lights with mullions between. Balcony to 2nd storey. Four-centred arched doorways. Centre gable has coat of arms over two pointed doorways with wrought iron hinges. Low stone wall to road. No 38 is a single storey, one-window building of same build to South Side, gabled to road with crenellations. Legend 'Savings Bank' over door, which has decorative iron hinges. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} Pevsner mistakenly lists the Northgate site as the site of the original 17th century foundation, and this appears to have been followed by the listing descriptions. {1}{2} The site at Northgate was acquired by the Carre's Hospital charity in 1857, in order to expand the almshouses. The original site of the 1636 almshouses is on East Gate/Carre Street (PRN 60257) near the church, although none of the original buildings survive. {4}
