Full Description

Carres Hospital, built by London architect H E Kendall. Nine-bay E range of 1830, seven-bay S range of 1841-6 perhaps by Charles Kirk, who was the contractor for the earlier stage. Castellations and porches. {1} Carres Hospital, bequeathed by the will of Robert Carre in 1636, is described as a 'neat stone building'. It originally accommodated 12 poor men, in 1872 this was increased to 18. Each tenant received 10/- per week, 1.5 tonnes of coal per annum and a blue cloak. {2} Architect, H E Kendall. Nine bay East range of 1830. Seven bay south range of 1841-6. On site of the house of the Carre family. L-shape in plan. Range of early 19th century almshouses in ashlar. Good 'Gothick' design of two storeys, five projecting porches with four-centred entrance arches and corner buttresses. Garden in front with pump and sun-dial and a paved walk beside street. Stone wall to right. Old gas lamp standard. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.{3} This is the original site of the 17th century almshouse founded by Robert Carre in 1636. It was formerly the site of Carre House (PRN 65343), the Carre family residence, and parts of this building survived within the almshouse buildings until 1823. There were several phases of rebuilding of the houses and the chapel during the 19th century. In 1857 the charity purchased a site in Northgate (PRN 60258) to build a new almshouse for the accommodation of 8 extra pensioners who received the same benefits as those resident at the old site. {5} Pevsner mistakenly lists the Northgate site as the site of the original 17th century foundation, and this appears to have been followed by the listing descriptions. {1}{3}
