Full Description
When scheduled in 1970, the moat consisted of a rectangular area approx 35 yards x 25 yards surrounded by a wet ditch 15-20ft wide. The central area was raised 6ft above the water. {1}
This site is likely to have been the site of the manor house at Spanby. As well as the moat itself, fish ponds have been noted. Prior to the Conquest, the land was held by the manor of Swaton, and by 1086 belonged to Colsuain as part of his manor of Ouseby. A manor house was constructed on the site during the 12th century, when the land was held by John, son of William Filiot. In the early 16th century it was the principal residence of Arthur Spanby. The moated site is now flat and under cultivation with no evident surface remains of the moat or the island. A survey of 1979 depicted a subrectangular island measuring 26m by 22m which was raised approximately 1m above the surrounding ground level. The island was enclosed by a moat, approximately 12m in width and 1m deep, with a narrow outlet channel located close to the north eastern corner of the moat. The island was levelled, the moat infilled and the site ploughed flat in 1980. This monument was descheduled in January 2001. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{10}{11}
