The site is now grass covered and occupies a commanding outlook over the west from what is known as the Middle Street. Forty rooms and passages were exposed, some showing interesting Roman pavements. {1} A large courtyard villa, excavated in 1795, revealed more than 40 rooms, many tessellated pavements, pottery, brooches and coins, including some of Constantine. Twenty skeletons, some lying on the foundation walls, some enclosed in stone coffins, were discovered in two of the rooms of the west wing. All were orientated east to west and point to Anglo-Saxon or later Christian burials. In addition, the skeleton of a woman with a Roman bronze ring on one of the finger bones was found. The published villa site is under plough and the indicated pottery site under crop. {2} The excavation in 1795 revealed two mosaics, the larger one that paved the porticus on the west side of the main building is mid fourth century in date. {9}
