Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF NORMANBY HAS NO MARKED DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGE DOCUMENTED, EXCEPT FOR ITS SURPRISINGLY SMALL SIZE AT THE END OF C16. ITS PRESENT MORPHOLOGY, A CROSS LAYOUT BASED ON A PRINCIPAL E-W STREET AND ROADS NORTH AND SOUTH TO ADJACENT SETTLEMENTS, MAY BE A SIMPLIFICATION BROUGHT ABOUT IN THE REGROWTH FROM THAT LOW POINT. THE ANCIENT ENCLOSURE MAPPED IN 1791 FORMED A LARGE BLOCK ELONGATED NORTH-SOUTH ALONG THE LOW RIDGE FROM THE PARISH BOUNDARY TO PARISH BOUNDARY: HERE WERE TWO MEDIEVAL MANORS CALLED 'SUTHALLE' AND 'NORTHALLE' (51078 AND 51077), AS AT SPRIDLINGTON, AND THERE WAS A GRANGE OF STAINFIELD PRIORY UNTIL THE DISSOLUTION (51076 AND 53966), PROBABLY ALSO WITHIN THE SETTLEMENT COMPLEX. TOO FEW AND SEEMINGLY VAGUE EARTHWORKS SURVIVE TO ALLOW THEM TO BE INVESTIGATED FOR FIELD EVIDENCE. {1}
