Full Description

The settlement of Newsham appears on three holdings in the district of broculesb, one of them a manor with a minimum population of six. This, apparently by the mid twelfth century including the site of a castle, formed the core of the endowment at Newsham Abbey. Nevertheless Newsham is named as a junior partner to Brocklesby and Little Limber. One household in 1563 may have been occupying the monarchic site. Slight earthworks lying along the precinct boundary of the abbey and recorded on early aerial photographs are now carefully ploughed up and have produced a pottery scatter of largely later medieval types. This may represent a relocation of Newsham village when the abbey took over the earlier manorial site, and decline and abandonment linked to the abbey's reduction and dissolution. {1}{2}
