Full Description

TAXATION RETURNS AND OTHER DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE REVEAL NO DRAMATIC SWINGS OF FORTUNE FOR THE SETTLEMENT OF BIGBY. SINCE IT IS RETURNED WITH KETTLEBY AND KETTLEBY THORPE IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, AN UNDOUBTED DECLINE IN THE LATE C14 MAY BE PRINCIPALLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO THEIR REDUCTION. SOME EARLY PROPERTIES MAY HAVE BEEN ABANDONED ON THE EAST OF THE THROUGH ROAD AND REPLACED BY LARGE PROPERTIES. THE SETTLEMENT MAY HAVE ONCE EXTENDED FURTHER SOUTH. {1}
