Full Description

This structure was built as a Co-Op store in 1897. The foundation stone was laid by George Hartley, treasurer of the Lincoln Equitable Co-Op Society, on 2nd May. It is a red brick building with Flemish bond with elaborate stone decoration including a beehive in the central pediment. The central section has six bays with six arched windows (the central two are semi-circular) with segmental arches to the other four. It has an attractive shop front with double doorway. To the south side is the manager's house. To the north side is a separate but matching shop front which may have been a butcher's. This has stone mullioned square-head window at first floor level with a carved panel above. {1} The Wm Mortimer & Son (Lincoln) shops were built in 1897 from brick with stone dressings and have a slate roof. Nos 14 and 16 retain most of their original shopfronts.
