Monument record MLI53608 - SETTLEMENT OF OWMBY

Summary

SETTLEMENT OF OWMBY

Type and Period (2)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF OWMBY HAS A RECORDED POPULATION IN THE LATE C11 AS LARGE AS AT ANY TIME IN THE LATER MIDDLE AGES: FROM THE LATER C16 IT IS RETURNED AS ONE WITH SEARBY. SLIGHT EARTHWORKS RECORDED ON EARLY APS REINFORCE THE IMPRESSION FROM THE PRESENT SETTLEMENT OF A SIMPLE TWO-ROW LAYOUT ON A STREET RUNNING AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE SCARP. ONLY FRAGMENTS OF SIDE ROADS OR WAYS SHOWN ON ESTATE MAPS SUGGEST THE POSSIBILITY OF GREATER COMPLEXITY. {1}
