Full Description

THE SITE OF COLDECOTES HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN IDENTIFIED AND IT HAS USUALLY BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE ADJACENT SETTLEMENT OF COLLOW. ITS EXISTENCE WAS FIRST NOTED IN 1086 WHEN IT WAS LISTED IN THE SOKE OF WRAGBY IN THE DOMESDAY BOOK WITH A RECORDED POPULATION OF 7. THEREAFTER ITS SIZE AND FORTUNES ARE POORLY DOCUMENTED AND DIFFICULT TO DETAIL. BY THE EARLY TWELFTH CENTURY IT HAD BECOME SEPARATED FROM WRAGBY AND WAS HELD AS AN INDEPENDENT MANOR DIRECTLY OF THE CROWN. IN 1307 COLDECOTES PASSED FROM THE GRELLE OR GRELLYES FAMILY TO THE DE LA WARRES FAMILY WHEN IT WAS PART OF THE ADJACENT MANOR OF SIXHILLS. ITS PREVIOUS PROSPERITY, WHEN THE MANOR HAD DWELLING HOUSES, GARDENS AND ORCHARDS AND A DOVECOTE, WAS RECOLLECTED IN 1322, BUT BY THEN THE HOUSES WERE IN RUINS. IN 1407 THOMAS DE LA WARRE GRANTED COLDECOTES TO THE GILBERTINE PRIORY OF SIXHILLS. IT THEN COMPRISED NOTHING BUT 50 ACRES OF MEADOW AND 300 ACRES OF PASTURE. FOLLOWING THE ACQUISITION OF THE ESTATES OF THE PRIORY BY THE HENEAGES OF HAINTON AT THE DISSOLUTION, COLDECOTES SURVIVED INTO THE EARLY SEVENTEENTH CENTURY AS A GROUP OF NOW UNLOCATEABLE FIELDS IN LEGSBY TO WHICH 3 MESSUAGES WERE ATTACHED, AND AS A PLACE RECOGNIZABLE TO THE CONSISTORY COURT IN LINCOLN IN 1615. THEREAFTER ALL KNOWLEDGE OF THE PLACE IS LOST. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ORIGINAL SETTLEMENT, ALREADY DESERTED IN 1322 WAS RE-OCCUPIED AS A GRANGE FROM WHICH THE ADJCACENT PASTURES WERE RUN AFTER THE ACQUISITION BY SIXHILLS PRIORY IN 1407. {1}, HTM 60M
