Full Description

Slight earthwork consisting of a low circular earthen bank, 20cm high, with a shallow external ditch. The gap through the bank on the north side may be original though a second gap on the east is perhaps the result of cattle trampling. Past interpretations of the site have included a Bronze Age ritual site, a Roman signal station, or an ancient battel site. The feature is, however, a tree ring, likely associated with 18th century landscaping. The feature overlies the remains of medieval ridge and furrow, and is depicted on an estate map of 1814, complete with its stand of trees. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7} The feature was still visible in October 1999, but appeared to survive as a cropmark, rather than earthworks. {8}
