Full Description
THE SETTLEMENT REMAINS OF BECKERING WERE FORMERLY AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF EARTHWORKS OF A CLAYLAND VILLAGE EXTENDING TO 12-14 HA, UNTIL THEY WERE DESTROYED IN 1963-75. IN 1563 THERE ARE STILL 13 HOUSEHOLDS, AND IN 1624 THERE WAS STILL A LARGE AND WELL-FURNISHED MANOR HOUSE: THE MID AND LATER SEVENTEENTH CENTURY SAW THE NUMBER OF COMMUNICANTS IN THE PARISH DROP BY NEARLY A HALF AND THIS PROBABLY PRINCIPALLY AFFECTED BECKERING, ALBEIT THAT 6 HOUSEHOLDS WERE STILL ATTIBUTED THERE IN THE EARLY EIGHTEENTH CENTURY. FINDS INCLUDE POTTERY. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
