Full Description
THE SETTLEMENT REMAINS OF BECKERING WERE FORMERLY AN EXCELLENT EXAMPLE OF EARTHWORKS IN A CLAYLAND VILLAGE EXTENDING TO 12-14 HA. WHEN THE NORTH PART WAS DESTROYED IN ABOUT 1963, HOUSE FOUNDATIONS REPORTEDLY SHOWED UP IN PLOUGHING AND POTTERY FROM THE TWELFTH-SEVENTEENTH CENTURY. WITH THE FIELD NAME HALL YARD AND PREMISES THIS MAY HAVE BEEN PRINCIPALLY A MANORIAL COMPLEX. THE SOUTH PART WAS DESTROYED IN OCTOBER 1975: IT INCLUDED A MAIN HOLLOW WAY 1-1.5 M DEEP AND TYPICAL VILLAGE PLOTS: ANUMBER OF BUILDING OR HOUSE SITES WERE MARKED BY A CLAY FLOOR, LIMESTONE RUBBLE, COBBLED YARDS AND SMALL QUANTITIES OF MEDIEVAL POTTERY. THE SETTLEMENT MATCHED HOLTON FOR POPULATION INTHE ELEVENTH CENTURY AND WAS EARLIER MANORIALISED, BUT AT LEAST FROM THE FOURTEENTH CENTURY WAS THE JUNIOR PARTNER AND THEREAFTER REGULARLY RETURNED WITH HOLTON UNTIL IT WAS AGAIN DIFFERENTIATED IN 1563. FINDS INCLUDED POTTERY AND A BRONZE THIMBLE. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
