Full Description

Earthwork remains of the shrunken village of Fulnetby. The remains of the village lie principally to the east of Fulnetby Hall. Earthworks survived until at least 1953, and they were subsequently totally destroyed without record. The village was based on an east-west aligned street, which lies to the north of the modern road, and followed a simple two-row morphology. The road was probably re-aligned to by-pass the 16th century house and gardens. Pottery found on the site was dated up to the 16th century. Fulnetby does not appear separately in medieval taxation returns between the Domesdays book and the mid-16th century, although it is known there were 15 houses in 1563. There was a sharp drop to 6 houses between 1705 and 1723, and only one dwelling survived in 1842. Fulnetby had a parochial chapel subordinate to the rand. A potter scatter was found at TF 0998 7956, indicating that the occupation of the village continued into the 18th century. Another pottery scatter, dating to the 19th century, was found to the south of the road. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
