Full Description

Earthworks of a possible medieval trackway at Sudbrooke Park, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} Further earthworks were revealed in this area in March 2016, during archaeological recording conducted to inform proposed residential development. The area is obscured by trees, and it would not have been possible for the NMP to identify the full extent of the features here. The earthworks clearly relate to a line of former fishponds, depicted on the 1st edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map, to the immediate west and south of the current Hall Farm. The ponds do not appear on earlier mapping for this area, and therefore date from somewhere between 1836 and 1886. The ponds must have been short-lived, as they are labelled as 'Old Fishponds' at this time, and a new line of fishponds are shown, further to the west. {2}
