Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

A ploughed out earthwork mound, clearly visible on aerial photographs of this area. The feature is scheduled as the remains of a Neolithic long barrow, with a central mortuary enclosure covered by a mound, now spred by ploughing but visible as an extensive spread of chalk. The encircling quarry ditch is thought to be obscured by this chalk spread. For full details see scheduling document 27889. The interpretation of this feature as a long barrow is not conclusively held. Alternative interpretations include it being the remains of a post-medieval chalk quarry pit, or possibly more likely as a spoil heap associated with the 19th century excavation of the surrounding Roman villa site (see MLI50571). {1}{2}{3}
