Full Description

The Church of St Clement retains Norman to Perpendicular features. It was much restored in 1863. It was in normal use in 1964. {1}{2}{3}{4} A parish church with features dating from the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 17th centuries. It was restored in 1863 by Ewan Christian. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and coursed limestone rubble, and features lead roofs with an ashlar-coped east gable with cross finial, and ashlar battlemented east nave gable with pinnacles and cross finial. The church is comprised of a west tower, nave with north and south aisles, rectangular chancel. The possibly 11th century round west tower was encased in ashlar and raised in the 14th century. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {5}{6} A discrete area of relatively recent demolition material was identified adjacent to the tower in January 2014, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for new drainage at the church. Finds of post-medieval window glass, brick and tile were recovered from the deposit, which may possibly be related to the 1863 restoration works. Fragments of medieval tile were also found in the demolition deposit, suggesting the church had previously been roofed with tiles. {7}{8} Historic graffiti at this church was recorded in September 2021 by the Lincolnshire Medieval Graffiti Project. The survey identified a large number of historic marks present throughout the church, although more concentrated around the tower and north aisle. The marks comprise examples from a wide variety of graffiti types, including a large number of memorial graffiti and initials, figurative images of people and possible fish, masons marks, witch marks, crosses, and geometric shapes. {9}{10}{11}
