Full Description

THE FOOTBRIDGE WAS BUILT IN 1883 BY THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY ON THE SITE OF AN EARLIER SWING BRIDGE. IT IS MADE OF CAST IRON WITH STEEL APPROACH RAMPS. {1} THERE WAS A SWING BRIDGE BUILT OVER THE FOSSDYKE BY THE GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY THAT WAS REMOVED IN 1937 AFTER THE SAXILBY BYPASS WAS CONSTRUCTED. THE ABUTMENT STILL STANDS, WHICH IS OF RARE SURVIVAL AND INDICATES HOW THE BRIDGE ONCE WORKED. IT IS MADE OUT OF STONE AND BRICK, WITH A CURVED RECESS AND NICHE FOR POWER HANDLE. SOME COURSES OF BRICKWORK OF AN EARLIER DATE INDICATING THAT IT MAY WELL HAVE BEEN BUILT ON THE SITE OF AN EARLIER TURNPIKE ROAD BRIDGE. {2}
