Full Description
The settlement of Saxilby appears in documentary sources always as a large medieval settlement, with those in Ingleby regularly returned as its members or ancillaries. Though operating a single integrated 3-field system, Saxilby's later medieval poly-focal form is well brought out by an estate map of 1648. This shows three distinct settlement groups:
i) A cluster around St Botolph's Church and along Church Lane, to the north-west.
ii) A row of properties along the north bank of the Fosse Dyke.
iii) A group of regular narrow properties on both sides of the High Street, that widens to form a triangular market area at the junction with Sykes Lane. In the latter area, the plots on the east side of the street have a back lane, while those on the west seem to take their curving shape from underlying ridge and furrow. {1}{2}
A timber-framed building was discovered at SK 8912 7561. It had a base cruck structure on stone cill walls. It was exposed in alterations. It was of two or possibly three bays, and medieval pottery was found in association. {3}
An area of old enclosures stretched north of the Fosse Dyke from Saxilby bridge. In these lay the farmsteads, cottages and houses. West Field was on the west and Oak Tree Field and Mill Field to the east. {4}
