Full Description

WINDMILL MOUND (SAME AS 00172) LIES SOUTH WEST OF THE VILLAGE, AGAINST THE PARISH BOUNDARY WITH TOFT NEWTON. THERE IS NO DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE FOR A WINDMILL BEFORE EARLY C19 WHEN FIRST EDITION OS MAP OF 1924 SHOWS A WOODEN POST MILL HERE, BUT THE FURLONG NAME MILNEHALL LYING IN THE WEST FIELD AND RECORDED AT LEAST FROM C13 MAY RELATE TO THIS. NO MILL IS SHOWN HERE ON GREENWOODS COUNTY MAP OF 1830. THE MOUND IS 3 M HIGH, CIRCULAR, WITH A SURROUNDING DITCH AND WITH A FLAT TOP 12 ACROSS. THERE IS A STEEPRAMP ON THE NORTH SIDE. IT IS SITUATED ON A SMALL TRIANGULAR PIECE OF LAND BETWEEN BLOCKS OF RIDGE AND FURROW NOW DESTROYED, BUT VISIBLE ON APS, IN SUCH A WAY AS TO INDICATE THAT IT HAS BEEN INSERTED INTO AN EARLIER PATTERN OF FURLONGS. {1}, HEIGHT 3 M, DIAMETRE 12 M, HTM 17 M
