Full Description

Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, to the south-east of Sturton by Stow. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} The remains of the medieval ridge and furrow to the south-east of Sturton by Stow were recorded in July 2012, during an earthwork survey of land off Till Bridge Road. The remains comprised two adjacent sections of medieval ridge and furrow earthworks, with the furrows in the northern section broadly orientated along a north to south axis and along an east to west axis in the southern section. A relatively prominent bank, thought to be the remains of a former headland, was also recorded between the two sections. {2}{3} The earthworks were identified in January 2015, during archaeological monitoring of new residential development on land adjacent to Obam Stairlifts. The remains were noted as being very well defined, with the probable headland at the southern end of the site surviving as a low earthwork. {4}{5}
