Full Description

A whipping post constructed in 1789 of wood and iron. It is a six foot wooden post with hinged whipping irons which are attached on the north and south sides, each with two wrist holds of different sizes and a lower clasp to secure the wrists in place. The left hand iron is inscribed with 1789 W.H. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3} Photographs taken before 1910 show the whipping irons fastened to the upright of the signpost in the centre of the village. Consequently, the whipping irons, prior to the listing on 12 July 1985, had been attached to the village road sign at the crossroads at the centre of the village (approximately SK 8823 8192). Any earlier location of the whipping irons is unknown and nor is the original location of the irons known. At the 9 December 1969 meeting of Stow Parish Council the minutes record that the Council were making efforts to obtain a suitable post for the erection of the village whipping irons to be placed at the corner of the Green near No.1 Church Road with an appropriate notice to be painted and fixed to the post. The evidence from the Stow Parish Council minute book indicates that the present whipping post was probably erected sometime in the 1970s. {4}
