Full Description

A sixty-five foot high brick tower mill which was coated with tar. It has four floors with the grinding apparatus on the ground floor. The cap was removed but the top was covered in 1965. The outbuildings were in use as garages and a warehouse at that time. {1}{2} Tower mill, dating from the early 19th century. Now is use as a private residence. The tapering five-storey tower is built of brick painted with bitumen, and features a dog tooth dentillated top, surmounted by a 20th glazed lantern. The entrance has a plain 20th century planked door, with four two-light casements above, one to each storey. All the openings have segmental heads. The belt drive wheel is to the right hand side. To the rear is a 20th century single storey house addition. It carried on by engine, then by electricity until the late 1960s. A new observatory-type top was put on in 1974 and the tower is now preserved. There were four patent sails, driving three pairs of stones. Of the original gear, only the curb and one grey bedstone remains. Later gear consisting of a roller and a hurst frame with a pair of grey stones also survives. {6}{7} The observatory room built on top of the tower after the cap was removed was itself dismantled by the spring of 2004. {8}
