Full Description

Aisthorpe was always a small settlement. There were earthworks surrounding the church and outlined by ridge and furrow, as seen on aerial photographs of 1946. The remains probably included a manorial complex, which from the mid 16th century to the later 17th century was the principal residence of a branch of the Amcotts family, then Lords of the Manor. Thus there may also have been formal garden remains over the settlement remains. The site was destroyed in 1952-53, when foundations of buildings were discovered. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} The original church at Aisthorpe was mentioned in the Domesday Book, but none of it now survives. The present church was built in 1868. {6}
