Full Description
The first ironstone workings to be opened in the Lincolnshire Wolds were at Claxby in 1868. They were worked for 17 years, when mining ceased until the Nettleton mines were driven in 1928. The only maps which show above ground evidence are the 1" to the mile map of 1890 and the Ordnance Survey County Series maps. The northern part of the underground workings are depicted on an undated and untitled plan, which also depicts the workings at Nettleton Top. Buildings, tramways and some of the workings are depicted on the maps, and some of these features still survive as earthworks. At its peak the mine produced about 70000 tons of ironstone, which fell dramatically just two years later, due to production of the Greetwell workings. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The interpretation of some of the earthworks was revised after a detailed examination of sources such as the newly discovered complete abandonment plan for the mine and copies of the 1st edition Ordnance Survey County Series 1:2500 maps. Annual production figures were also produced. {5}
