Full Description

A battery of five or seven Romano-British pottery kilns was observed in a field at Lea Grange Farm. After the field had been ploughed to a depth of about 15 inches, kiln debris was seen in well-marked patches, and this led the farmer to report his discovery to the museum in 1957. The site was examined by Tom Baker who identified what appeared to be the sites of five kilns, and there were also indications that two lime-stone structures had also been disturbed by the plough - possibly buildings associated with the pottery kilns. As a pottery producing centre the site seems to have had a long life, with wares of varying periods being produced - from the late first century to the third century or fourth century, including some 'rusticated' wares. The site was visited by Ben Whitwell in 1963 and a selection of the surface finds retained by Lincoln Museum. A gradiometer survey was carried out in March 1964 by Ben Whitwell and Doncaster Museum. {1}{3}{5} In 1964 the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Inspector reported that the field was under plough. Fieldwalking revealed a surface scatter of limestone and fragmentary Roman pottery. Nothing of any significance was found elsewhere in the field. {3} Further finds of a rim and two sherds of heavily encrusted rustic ware, the rim very definitely a waster from the known Romano-British kiln site, were found and reported in 1968. {7}{2} The site was described as a large and totally unexplored regional complex by Vivien Swan. {6} The Ordnance Survey card has a grid reference of SK84678706, possibly a mistaken reading of SK84678607? {3}
