Full Description

ST LAWRENCE AND ST GEORGE'S CHURCH HAS AN ANGLO-SAXON WEST TOWER. THE CURIOUS SOUTH WINDOW IS PROBABLY OF THE KEYHOLE TYPE. THE WEST DOORWAY IS BLOCKED AND PART OF A WINDOW HAS BEEN SET IN. THE PSEUDO-SAXON BELL STAGE DATES FROM 1895 RESTORATION. {4} THE DRASTIC 'RESTORATIONS' TO WHICH THE CHURCH WAS SUBJECTED IN 1845 AND 1876 HAVE LEFT VERY LITTLE THAT CAN NOW BE RECOGNISED AS ANGLO- SAXON WORKMANSHIP. THE UNBUTTRESSED WEST TOWER IS OF SMALL, FLATTISH STONE RUBBLE, WITH SIDE-ALTERNATE QUOINING OF LARGER, WELL-DRESSED STONES, SET SLIGHTLY FORWARD FROM THE WALL-FACE TO SERVE AS A STOP FOR PLASTER. THE TOWER NOW RISES SHEER FROM A CHAMFERED PLINTH TO A SIMPLE MODERN PARAPET, BUT THE WHOLE OF THE BELFRY WITH ITS PSEUDO-SAXON DOUBLE-WINDOWS IS MODERN, AND THE ORIGINAL FABRIC SEEMS TO END ABOUT THE LEVEL OF THE RIDGE OF THE ROOF OF THE NAVE. EXTERNALLY, THE NORTH AND EAST FACES OF THE ORIGINAL TOWER HAVE NO OPENINGS; WHILE IN THE WEST FACE A BLOCKED DOORWAY HAS APPARENTLY BEEN USED AS A MUSEUM, TO HOUSE A NUMBER OF SALVAGED FRAGMENTS, WHICH HAVE BEEN BUILT INTO THE WALL ROUND A SMALL MODERN WINDOW. IT IS NOW IMPOSSIBLE TO BE SURE WHETHER THE DOORWAY ORIGINALLY HAD A SEMICIRCULAR STONE TYMPANUM UNDER ITS ROUND-ARCHED HEAD, BUT NEITHER THE PRESENT TYMPANUM NOR THE ARCH SURROUNDING IT APPEARS TO BE ORIGINAL. BY CONTRAST, THE SQUARE JAMBS AND THE PROJECTING IMPOSTS SEEM TO BE ORIGINAL, AND THEIR POSITIONS CORRESPOND WITH THE INTERNAL OPENING, WHICH HAS A ROUND HEAD ABOUT 9 FEET HIGH AND ABOUT 3 FEET WIDE. A SMALL WINDOW HIGH UP IN THE SOUTH FACE IS NOW MUCH WEATHERED, BUT APPEARS ORIGINALLY TO HAVE HAD TALL MONOLITHIC JAMBS, WIDE HORIZONTAL IMPOSTS, AND A MONOLITHIC ROUND HEAD OUTLINED BY A SEMICIRCULAR HOOD-MOULDING. THE TOWER IS ROUGHLY 10 FEET 6 INCHES SQUARE INTERNALLY WITH WALLS ABOUT 2 FEET 9 INCHES THICK. {3}
