Full Description
Site of the possible medieval hamlet or farmstead of Towland, now occupied by Woodhouse Farm. Woodhouse was treated as a separately titheable hamlet or division of Corringham in the mid 19th century, extending to 74 hectares. The farm was earlier known as Towland House Farm. The area, mapped in 1753 as part of the manor of Great Corringham, then lay part still in Thorn Wood and part in closes named 'Dawtry Spring', 'Thorn Wood Closes', and 'Towland Lane Closes'; apparently resulting from the assarting or clearance of Thorn Wood. This may have been quite recent since no farm existed at that date. {1}
