Full Description

ALTHOUGH ITS THREE DOMESDAY HOLDINGS WERE ALL SOKELAND WITH NO POPULATION RECORDED, BLYTON APPEARS AS AN AVERAGE-SIZED SETTLEMENT IN THE EARLY C14. IT RECOVERED COMPLETELY FROM THE AFFECTS OF BLACK DEATH AND EVIDENTLY EXPANDED IN THE LATE MIDDLE AGES OR EARLY C16. IT DOUBLED IN RECORDED POPULATION OVER THE FIRST HALF OF THE C19 AND DOUBLED AGAIN OVER THE FIRST HALF OF THE C20. HOWEVER THE SETTLEMENT'S PLAN AND MUCH OF ITS MORPHOLOGICAL DETAIL REMAINS AS DEPICTED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE C19 ON THE ENCLOSURE AWARD MAPS OF 1805. IT HANGS UPON AN EAST-WEST MAIN STREET; WHERE AT THE EAST END THIS TURNS NORTH ACROSS A SHALLOW VALLEY, THERE IS A SEPARATE TWO- ROW SETTLEMENT ELEMENT ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE VALLEY, CERTAINLY PRESENT BY 1805. ON THE MAIN STREET, TOO, THE PROPERTIES FALL INTO DISCRETE BLOCKS DIVIDED BY SIDE STREETS. ON THE NORTH THE BLOCKS HAVE VERY DIFFERENT PROPERTY DEPTHS, GROWING SHALLOWER TO THE WEST; ON THE SOUTH THERE IS THE REMAINS OF A BACK LANE, 'MILL FOOT ROAD', UNIFYING BUT NOT MASKING THE STEPPED JUNCTION BETWEEN BLOCKS. WITHIN EACH ONE, PROPERTIES APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN OF QUITE REGULAR WIDTHS. THE OVERALL IMPRESSION IS OF A SUCCESSIVELY ACCRETIVE GROWTH OF PLANNED ADDITIONS TO THE SETTLEMENT. TO THE NORTHEAST OF THE CHURCH, A TRIANGULAR AREA BOUNDED BY THE LANE TO THE CHURCH, THE MAIN STREET, AND A FOOTPATH ON THE SOUTH, LOOKS LIKE A FORMER GREEN INFILLED WITH SMALL AND REGULAR PROPERTIES. {1}~, HTM 22M
