Summary

MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT OF EAST FERRY (KINNARD'S FERRY)

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT IS DOCUMENTED ONLY FROM THE EARLY C13 ONWARDS AND FOR MANY PURPOSES IS SUBSUMED UNDER SCOTTON. IT DOUBLED IN POPULATION PROBABLY IN THE LATER C18 AND AS A RESULT OF ADDITIONAL CULTIVATABLE LAND FROM INTAKES AND WARPING WHICH MAY HAVE CAUSED A CHANGE IN MORPHOLOGY. THE SETTLEMENT CLINGS TO THE TRENT BANK ON EITHER SIDE OF A NORTH-SOUTH STREET THAT MIRRORS THE RIVER'S CURVE. THE TITHE AWARD MAP OF 1839 SHOWS STRIP HOLDINGS IN THE OPEN FIELD IMMEDIATELY EAST OF THE SETTLEMENT AND INDICATES THAT MANY PROPERTIES EAST OF THE STREET HAVE WIDTHS COINCIDING WITH SINGLE STRIPS OR GROUPS OF STRIPS. THEY MAY THEREFORE BE A DEVELOPMENT OVER FORMER ARABLE AND THE MAIN STREET A DEVELOPMENT OF AN EARLIER BACK LANE WITH A CONTEMPORARY STREET ACTUALLY ALONG THE RIVER BANK. MANY OF THE PROPERTY AND STRIP BOUNDARIES ALSO LINE UP WITH THOSE WEST OF THE STREET, SUGGESTING A CLOSE EARLY LINK BETWEEN PROPERTIES AND FIELD LAND. {1}, HTM 4M
