Cutting of trenches around the sides of the church for new drains in the summer of 1986 revealed the footings of the chancel and the eastern end of the nave of a substantial stone-built church beneath the brick-built nave of Goltho Chapel. The early chancel was approximately the same size as the later nave - 8.1m long and 4.5m wide. The early nave was apparently without aisles and approximately 5.1m wide but the length was not determined. Tombstones dating from the 14th and 15th century form part of the modern floor. {1}
The foundations comprised a roughly coursed limestone footing with a chamfered sandstone plinth beneath. The earlier building was slightly off-alignment to the standing building, and the excavation showed that there was a time lapse between the demolition of the former church and the construction of the brick chapel. {3}
Paul Everson suggests that the earlier stone building represents the remains of the documented medieval church of St James, Bullington, on the basis of a reinterpretation of the documentary and excavated evidence. He suggests that the excavated manorial and deserted medieval village site is the documented medieval settlement of Bullington which underwent a change of name following the relocation of the manorial site to Goltho Hall after 1206, and the building of Goltho Chapel in the 17th century. {2}
