Full Description

A mid 18th century house, Goltho Hall has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was constructed of red brick and some ashlar. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Goltho was bought in the early 16th century by the family of Grantham, successful Lincoln merchants, who established themselves as county notables. Goltho was evidently turned into a suitable country seat for the successive generations of active public figures. In the late 17th century it passed to the Mainwaring family and was used as a principal residence at least until 1789. There is a drawing, probably by Nattes in around 1790, of a red-brick mansion of about 1700. This house perhaps stood on the site now occupied by the 19th century hall. An earlier and grander mansion is described in the probate inventory of Sir Thomas Grantham (died 1630) and included some additions to an earlier building. {3} For a detailed history and description see Everson, Taylor and Dunn, 1991.{3} The present house is a fragment of around 1800 with the rest being around 1900. {5}
