Full Description

The medieval deerpark at Goltho was formerly surrounded by a substantial linear bank and flanking ditches, fragments of which survive. Direct documentation of the park was first made in Sir Thomas Grantham's Probate Inventory of 1630, although medieval origins are suggested by a reference to a wood with herbage called 'Les Laundes' within Gilbert de Umfraville's manor of Goltho in 1381. The best surviving fragment of the park pale earthwork is a 100m lengh to the west of Shepherd's Farm where it has an overall width of approx. 10m complete with flanking ditches (at TF12197708). The bank re-emerges east of Shepherd's Farm (at TF12347715) and turns south-southeast to follow the parish boundary with Wragby on the Goltho side for approx. 450m in pasture and woodland (to TF12637689). Here the overall width is 10m including the flanking ditches. The bank is 6m wide and a maximum of 1.5m high, though generally between 0.5m to 1m high. Elsewhere the park pale survives as a degraded bank or in fragments only. {1}, AREA 174HA, HTM 15M
