Full Description

A fragment of a dug-out canoe was ploughed up in December 1953, at Fen Farm, Short Ferry ('Stainfield 1'). The vessel measured 6ft long by 2ft wide, and was thought to have probably had a square bow (Fox type I). The exact findspot is uncertain - The SMR card has the location as TF 0990 7156. The Ordnance Survey card has a similar location of TF 0989 7155, although it reports that the finder had died by 1964, and that the canoe could not be located. A farm worker recollected the find spot as more central to the field, however, at approximately TF 0973 7160. Only a couple of bungs/depth gauges survived. These were sent for radiocarbon dating in 1978. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
