Full Description

PRN 51182 The settlement of Southrey exhibits a remarkably regular form, based on two east-west streets (parallel to the river Witham, but 200m and 500m distant from it) that spring at right angles from an access road to the former ferry. Each street has long narrow properties to the north and south, some of those at the west end with a reversed s-shape and apparently overlying ridge and furrow, indicating encroachment on earlier arable. In the 19th century at least, the two blocks were treated as separate hamlets called 'High Thorpe' and 'Low Thorpe'. The date of creation of this evidently planned layout is unknown. Southrey is commonly subsumed under Bardney in documentary sources for population levels, but the 52 households of 1563 match 19th century and present figures and may imply a regulated plan. {1} Allen Archaeological Associates undertook a watching brief in July 2005 during the excavation of the foundations for an extension to the Thatched Cottage, Southrey (51182a). A probable medieval pond was found along with eight sherds of 13th to 16th century pottery and two sherds of medieval tile. {3}{4}
