Full Description

In addition to the medieval parochial church at Bardney and possibly two other chapels, there was a medieval chapel dedicated to St. Andrew. In 1434 it was recorded as lying to the north of the plot of land granted for the building of the new parish church. Between 1266 to 1280 Robert de Milay, a clerk, received 'the chapel of St. Andrew in Bardney, with two tofts and the houses built thereon between the chapel and the king's highway, and the trees round the chapel and the cross outside it', in return for a gift of land in Osgodby. Robert de Milay had licence to found a chantry, undertaking to maintain the fabric. A tomb slab to Roger Llewelyn, Chaplain of the chapel of St. Andrew was found during the abbey excavations. {1}{2}{3} For a discussion of the significance of the chapel see Stocker, 1993. {4}
