UNLOCATED SITE OF THE CHAPEL OF ST. LEONARD

Type and Period (1)

  • (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

IN ADDITION TO THE MEDIEVAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH AT BARDNEY AND POSSIBLY TWO OTHER CHAPELS, THERE WAS A MEDIEVAL CHAPEL DEDICATED TO ST. LEONARD. PHYSICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE SITE OF THE CHAPEL IS LIMITED. IT WAS RECORDED AS LYING ADJACENT TO THE HOUSE OF THE VICAR OF STS. PETER AND PAUL IN 1434 AND THIS MAY SUGGEST THAT IT WAS NOT REMOTE FROM THE CENTRE OF THE MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT. THERE ARE MANY REPORTS OF ARCHITECTURAL STONEWORK OR FOUNDATIONS AROUND THE VILLAGE, INCLUDING THE FOUNDATIONS OF A 'CHURCH' AND MANY TOMBSTONES EXCAVATED BY CHARLES LAING IN A GARDEN IN ABBEY LANE. {1}{2}{3}{4}~
