Full Description

A PRE-CONQUEST MONASTERY AT BARDNEY, FOUNDED BEFORE 697 AD BY ETHELRED OF MERCIA AND HIS WIFE OSTHRYD, IS DOCUMENTED BY BEDE AND IN THE ANGLO-SAXON CHRONICLE. IN c704 ETHELRED IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE RETIRED TO BARDNEY, EVENTUALLY BECOMING ABBOT. POSSIBLY DESTROYED c870, THE SITE IS MENTIONED AS DESOLATE IN c909 OR 910. THE ABBEY WAS REFOUNDED IN c1087 BY GILBERT DE GANT ON WHAT WAS CLAIMED TO BE THE EARLIER MONASTIC SITE. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} SEE STOCKER 1993 FOR A DETAILED DISCUSSION OF THE SITING OF THE ANGLO-SAXON MONASTERY. {5}
