This record is for the country park and gardens. For the country house, see record PRN 55396.
The construction after about 1760 of the Gothic Fillingham Castle (possibly by John Carr for Sir Cecil Wray) on the scarp edge brought with it emparking of the limestone upland to its east and landscaping of the view west, with an ornamental lake, tree screens and gothicising of the church and farm buildings. {1}{2}
The 18th century landscape park and woodland of about 35ha surrounds the 18th century Gothic castle. Fillingham Castle (long called Somer's or Summer's Castle) was built for Sir Christopher Wray in a castellated Gothic style, possibly by John Carr of York, between about 1760 and 1770. It is sited on a slight ridge with views to the west and east. There is woodland surrounding the castle on the northern and southern sides, with a wooded belt of 1.5km extending along an eastern avenue to the Ermine Lodge (on Ermine Street, the A15), in matching Gothic style, with a pointed carriage arch, wrought-iron Gothic gates [PRN 56071 and 55401], battlemented lodges and partly crenellated walls for 75m along the road. There are lesser Gothic gateways on the north-western boundary (the Middle Street gateway) and into the small garden immediately west of the Castle. The view from the Castle westwards towards Fillingham Broad, takes in Fillingham church and the manor house, both buildings partially gothicised in the 18th century. The Park is 'listed' grade II. {3}
An icehouse is depicted at SK96498577 on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1891. The reference to the icehouse has gone by 1905.{4}{5}
A possible walled garden to the north of Fillingham Castle at SK95658611.{4}
A pheasantry and gamekeeper's lodge is depicted at SK96178628.{5}
