Full Description
Many coins dating back to Elizabeth I were found in a deposit at Kingerby Spa, before 1926. {1}{2}
The Spa, a brick-lined chalybeate well at Spa Farm, Kingerby, was once celebrated for its medicinal properties. Large numbers of coins dating back to Elizabeth I have been dredged from the pool. In 1963, Harper, the Ordnance Survey Field Inspector, reported that the well lay in a small, overgrown, artificial hollow. Three courses of narrow brickwork formed a semi-circular rim and another brick course and a coping stone, set into the side of the hollow, suggested that there was once a well-house. No information regarding the coins could be obtained at that time. {3}
A site visit in July 2012 found that little now remains of what was recorded by the Ordnance Survey Field Inspector in the 1960s. There was no trace of any brickwork at the site and not even any fragments of brickwork which might be expected if the site had been ploughed. There does remain a broad hollow although there was no sign of any water and it appears that the 'well' has been largely infilled in recent times. {4}
