Full Description

Caenby Hall was created by the Monck/Middleton family in the 18th century as their principal residence, and extended in the 19th century. The Hall was emparked, but stood uncomfortably close to Ermine Street, its garden walls running alongside the road. Caenby Hall became of secondary importance when the family inherited the estate at Belsay Castle in Northumberland in the late 18th century. The house was let out and eventually sold in 1871. After the 1930s the house was unoccupied for many years and was demolished after the 1960s. Only the garden walls and elements of the park remain and the site of the house has largely returned to farm land. {1}{2} A walkover survey was undertaken on the 15th January 2003 as part of an overall desktop assessment. No new archaeological finds or features were recorded {3} Caenby Hall, Caenby. Redeveloped 19th century farmstead. Loose courtyard. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex.
