Full Description

St Peter's Church is mainly Perpendicular and is much rebuilt. It was in normal use in 1963. {1}{2} The west tower is of 1756, although within the west walls of the aisles are 13th century lancet windows. The rest of the church is mostly Perpendicular, including the south and north windows of the aisles, the big and impressive entrance to the south porch (a niche above holds an image of the pieta), the south doorway, and also probably the tall three-bay arcades with octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches. There is also a late 14th century arms of the Tourney family. The chancel arch goes with the south arcade. In the north aisle east wall there is a recess for a reredos. The former north chapel was of two bays at least, as therefore the chancel has probably been shortened. The underside of the font is a sumptuous circular stiff-leaf capital. There are box pews. The south door is medieval, with a boss for the ring-pull. A fine 14th century chest is in the south aisle; the posts have rosettes and the front panel has intersected arches and rosettes etc. in the interstices. There are also fragments of stained glass in the north aisle and in the north aisle a window of c.1915 by Christopher Whall. Monuments include a 14th century effigy of a lady, defaced; and a brass demi-figure of Elizabeth Tourney (died 1452), utterly defaced. {3} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} Glentham war memorial consists of the clock of St Peter's Church and the memorial tablet inside the church. The tablet bears the names of those who died in the First World War. Both were unveiled in 1919. {6}
