Full Description

Roman building material, a scatter of large stones, brick, fragments of box and ordinary tiles, coarse pottery, millstones, etc, discovered by Ethel Rudkin in 1931. In 1964 the ordnance survey field inspector reported that a few sherds of coarse grey pottery were found at SK94139279 during fieldwalking and fragmentary tiles and black pottery were found at SK94119295; the area was then under crop. Mrs Rudkin stated that the main concentration of finds was at SK94169280. {1} Possibly referred to in 'Early Days in North-West Lincolnshire':- another occupation site lies immediately to the west of PRN50572 . Here Mrs Rudkin made trial holes in many places and always found burnt slabs of cliff stone, blackened potsherds, charcoal and bones. There was everywhere a noticeable absence of roofing tile. The digging of a trench 18 feet by 4 feet to a depth of 2 feet 4 inches exposed a series of rough hearths of cliff stone and the usual sherds, charcoal and bones. Many walling stones were brought to the surface during deep ploughing; also a good quernstone. {3}{4}
