Full Description

The site of a possible Roman farmstead or villa. Large stones of a building have been turned up by the plough, along with fragments of brick and tile, and coarse black and grey pottery fragments. Pottery occurs sparsely half way across the field immediately to the west. No tesserae were found in the 1920s but a few Roman coins were found around the covered spring. In 1964 Roman brick and tile fragments were found on the surface which was under pasture. {1}{2} In 1950 C. W. Phillips noted that the spring had been dug out and covered by a masonry vault at some time. The whole was below the general level of the field and access was through a semi-circular arch of uncemented stones. It was much filled in and the arch was collapsing. There was a rumour that the work was Roman. {2} To the south of Kirton, on Willoughton Cliff, Mrs Rudkin has investigated a Romano-British site known to local folk as the 'Roman Villa', situated on the north side of Old Leys Lane. She records the finding of many Roman coins during the removal of walls and foundations for use as road material at the beginning of the present century, and states that Samian and castor wares and roofing tiles occur among the debris. In the adjacent field to the north is the 'Roman Well' of very good construction and half-arched over the top. Mrs Rudkin also lists the following coins of the 3rd and early 4th century: Maximin, Gallienus, Tetricus, Constantine I and Constantine II. {3}{4}
