Full Description
A pagan Anglo-Saxon habitation site with a 6th century wooden dwelling and pottery identified by Ethel Rudkin. In 1964 Featherston, of the Ordnance Survey, reported that the field containing the site was under heavy plough and no significant finds were made during fieldwalking. Mrs Rudkin confirmed the site location. In 1964 she held the majority of the material found, although she had forwarded some of the pottery to Scunthorpe Museum. {1}
At Willoughton Mrs Rudkin has found what is evidently the site of a wooden dwelling of the 6th century. Some rosette-stamped pottery of this date has been found and also clear signs of surviving relics of the structure. The careful excavation of this site is greatly to be desired. {4}
For a detailed description of the pottery (presumably from this site?) see Myres. {7}
Anglo-Saxon hut sites, plough stones. {8}
Two further Anglo-Saxon sites (with plough stones) were identified at SK 9334 9270 and SK 9336 9268 by Ethel Rudkin who confirmed the site locations in 1964. {1}
The proximity of the hut sites suggests a possible settlement.
