Full Description
THE STAMFORD MERCURY OF MARCH 21, 1884, HAS THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH:- 'OUR CORRESPONDANT HAS LATELY BEEN FAVOURED BY MR F BARTRAM, PLUMBER, OF CAISTOR, WITH AN INSPECTION OF A QUANTITY OF FRAGMENTS OF ROMAN POTTERY WHICH WERE DISCOVERED AT STOUP HILL FARM, HOLTON-LE-MOOR, DURING THE PROCESS OF PLANTING SHRUBS IN MRS H. SEGRAVE'S GARDEN. THE MOST INTERESTING SPECIMEN CONSISTS OF THE HALF OF A BOWL OF CREAM-COLOURED WARE 9 INCHES IN DIAMETER, WHICH HAS TWICE IMPRINTED ACROSS ITS BROAD RIM THE WORD 'IDVNA', APPARENTLY THE POTTER'S NAME OR WORKSHOP MARK POSSIBLY A MORTARIA? . SIX OR SEVEN YEARS AGO c1877-78 , WHILST MEN WERE EXCAVATING TRENCHES TO RECEIVE THE WATERWORKS SERVICE PIPES, ALONG THE LANE LEADING TO STOUP HILL, A LAYER OF FRAGMENTS OF ANCIENT POTTERY ?ROMANO-BRITISH WAS COME UPON, AND ONE VASE ABOUT 9 FEET DEEP, WITH LID UPON IT, WAS TAKEN UP WHOLE. THIS WAS TAKEN POSSESSION OF BY MR HENRY SEGRAVE, MISS DIXON'S STEWARD. STOUP HILL HAS ITS NAME FROM AN ARTIFICIAL MOUND OF EARTH OF ANCIENT BRITISH CONSTRUCTION, BUT WHICH WAS LEVELLED AT THE ENCLOSURE OF THE MOOR.' {1}{2}{3}
