Full Description

The church has a broad west tower and the details are Perpendicular. The three-bay arcades are Early English and the piers on the north side are quatrefoiled and keeled and those on the south side are quatrefoiled with fillets. The chancel arch has fillets on the responds too, and capitals with crockets and a few upright leaves. With the arcades go the south aisle west and east lancets, the plain single-chamfered north doorway, and the very restored south doorway with shafts and dogtooth up the jambs and round the arch. Altogether most of the exterior is of the restoration of 1862. Can the north aisle east window be exempted? It has bar tracery with a trefoil at the top and therefore it could date from the later 13th century. The chancel was rebuilt in 1858 in the Early English style. {1} Waddingham comprised two medieval parishes belonging to the churches of St. Mary and St. Peter. Both churches are said to have stood in the same graveyard, though they were administratively in different deaneries. One was demolished following the union of the parishes in 1685. The surviving church (apparently St. Mary's) is now called St. Mary and St. Peter's. {2} A 13th century parish church which underwent alteration in the 15th century and was restored in c.1860 by James Fowler.
