Full Description

PRN 50754 A possible Romano-British farmstead with two ditched compounds, traces of internal buildings and possible ditched field boundaries; identified by a British Gas geophysical survey during work in advance of the Blyborough to Brigg pipeline in 1992. A strong anomaly in the southernmost compound possibly indicates a hearth, kiln or metal-working area. Surface material from fieldwalking suggests the site was occupied during the Roman period. {1}{2} Just visible as slight cropmarks on Paul Everson aerial photographs of 1979. {3} During fieldwork for the gas pipeline over 1000 sherds of Roman pottery were found together with quantities of building materials. There was also one coin of probable 4th century date. The geophysical survey provided some evidence of rooms of what may be a corridor type villa building. The site is probably that of a farmstead in use through the Roman period. There is a further similar pottery scatter at SK 95459605. {2} A further feature found during the pipeline construction at SK 9501396470 is assumed to be part of this site. {4}
